Juneteenth: Guided Canoe Tour of Historic Prince Edward Lake

Explore historic Prince Edward Lake on this guided canoe tour led by rangers. Created in the Great Depression era by the young black men of Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1390, Prince Edward Lake became home to Prince Edward State Park  – the first Virginia State Park accessible to people of color – in 1950. Discover more about the role this special and unique place played in the broader national civil rights movement while enjoying the tranquility of Prince Edward’s calm lake waters.  

Prior canoeing experience may be helpful, but it is not required. Register by calling or visiting the Discovery Center (434-394-0767) by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 14. Space is limited and spots will be available on a first come, first served basis. Closed-toe shoes are required, PFDs will be provided, and visitors must be 13 or older to participate.

To ensure an enjoyable time, please alert park staff to any necessary special accommodations you or your group may need. Parks are for everyone. This is an inclusive program open to all people.

Park in the large gravel lot in front of the Discovery Center (located near the swim beach) for easy access to the Prince Edward Lake boat ramp.
